Making Connections

M.C. is an alternative curriculum run in K.S.4.  It allows for students to access extra support in terms of academic ability and personal needs.

There are 40 students in Y10 target in 2 groups of 20.  Each group has an S.S.A. who moves around school with them providing continuity of support.  The S.S.A. gets to know their 20 students very well.  They develop close school/home links.

They follow a broad curriculum: G.C.S.E. courses in Maths, Languages, English (Literature and Language), Art and Humanities.  Unit award courses in Food, D & T, Science, and Groupwork and Humanities.  In I.T. lessons they follow Key Skills.  Students have an extra literacy lesson once a week.

In addition they attend Sheffield College for afternoons.  Here they either experience different “taster” courses or specialise in one course for the year.

In Y11 students continue with their academic studies.  In addition they spend a day a week at Work Experience.  This is monitored by the S.S.A’s.

Through their Group work sessions, led by our Senior Learning Mentor, and the Connexions Service. The students spend a lot of time preparing for the world of work or college.

The flexibility of the staffing and curriculum allows for trips, through M.C. or Groupwork budgets.  For example in maths the students organised and then went on a trip to a centre in Doncaster, in Groupwork as part of their self esteem work a small group of girls went to the Adelphi in Liverpool for a weekend of pampering.

Our data shows most M.C. students were satisfactorily placed in work, training or college post Waltheof.
